C. diff Infections Reach All-time High
The U.S. Center for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC) reports that Clostridium difficile (C. diff) infections have reached an all-time high. In fact, C. diff is linked to roughly 14,000 deaths between 2006 and 2007, up from the 3,000 deaths between 1999 & 2000.
Clostridium difficile (klos-TRID-e-uhm dif-uh-SEEL), often called C. difficile or C. diff, a species of Gram-positive bacterium that can cause symptoms ranging from diarrhea to life-threatening inflammation of the colon. Illness from C. difficile most commonly affects older adults in hospitals or in long term care facilities and typically occurs after use of antibiotic medications. C. diff other intestinal disease often occur when competing bacteria in the gut flora, have been wiped out by antibiotics.

In recent years, C. difficile infections have become more frequent, more severe and more difficult to treat. Each year, tens of thousands of people in the United States get sick from C. difficile, including some otherwise healthy people who aren't hospitalized or taking antibiotics.
